Tabanka Djaz, originally from Guinea-Bissau, was formed in 1988 and celebrate last year their 26`th anniversary of their first album”Tabanka(1990)”. Their sucess, both national and international has lead them to extensive touring in Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Senegal, France, Luxembourg, Holland, USA, Cap Vert, among other countries.
Since their first album, Tabanka Djaz has produced several albums(”Tabanka”1990, ”Indimigo”1993, ”Speranca”1996, ”Sintimento” 2002, ”Depois do Silencio”2014) and obtained Silver, Gold and Platinum records, awarded by the ”Associacao Fonogràfica Portuguesa”(Portuguese Phonographic Association).
With ”Speranca”(1996), an album that reached forty thousand sold copies, the band was nominated for the Nguomo Africa, the equivalent of the Grammys in the African continent.
In 1999, Martinho da Vila (Brasil) invited Tabanka Djaz to participate in the ”Lusofonia”projecto, a colaboration that consolidated their status, especially as Ambassadors of Gumbè, a native musical genre from the region of Bissau(Guinea-Bissau). In 2002, the group released”Sentimento”, an album with fresh sounds, including a significative colaboration with outstanding artists such as Martinho da Vila himself and the Guinean guitarist Tony Dudu.
The loss of an important and dear member of the group(keyboardist Calò Barbosa in 2016), the financial crisis which engulfed the local music industry and the return to Angola in 2008 of deummer Dinho Silva, have all contribuited to the eleven years of silence which now come to an end thanks to the determination of the band in respons to the relentless requests of their widespread fanbase.
”Depois do Silencio”(After the Silence) was released in the spirit of celebration of a quarter-century of existence commemorated in 2014 by Tabanka Djaz, reflecting their African soul in our present timeand, of course, inspired by love, as revealed in the single ”Foi Assim”.
