Trap Wave pioneer M Huncho performs at Pumpehuset in April
Since his debut album Utopia from 2019, M Huncho has been an unavoidable voice in the British hip-hop landscape, where he, as one of the founders of the hybrid genre trapwave, has helped to expand the domain of UK rap - and on April 18, 2024, he will show why at Pumpehuset in Copenhagen.
Huncho's voice is almost therapeutic with a singing, rocking gentleness that waves back and forth in the borderland between trap-rap and RnB-inspired singing - and it, the voice, is precisely the backbone of his now five studio albums, where the latest "my neighbors don I don't know.” is out in 2023. Huncho's lyrics are extremely personal and cut deep as he reveals growing up in north-west London and life as a self-made musician and trapwave pioneer.
And what exactly is trapwave? Trapwave is the perfect blend of the drill genre's semi-muddy lyrics and slowly undulating atmospheric instrumentation with melodic vocals – inserted into a refined hip-hop aesthetic. That's trapwave's chilled signature sound. And that sound, M Huncho is one of the founders of together with D-Block Europe.
M Huncho really stuck his head out for the first time in 2019 with the debut album Utopia, where the single Tranquility in particular hit the streaming services hard. However, 2019 was surpassed by 2020, when Huncho released two albums (one, DNA, a strong collab with Nafe Smallz), both of which reached the top 10 in the UK. Since then, things have really just gone from strength to strength for the aesthetically conscious London rapper.
The aesthetic also goes full circle with M Huncho, who not only sets a unique aesthetic mark on his musical expression, but also lets the aesthetic go again in his physical expression in the form of the mask he always wears. The mask is not just any primitive elephant hat or mock horror mask, but a tightly designed mask by the skater and fashion icon Lucien Clarke.
