Grammy-winning super singer visits Copenhagen with his beautiful folk songs
It's not every day you get to see a three-time Grammy winner live. But this autumn, concertgoers here at home have the opportunity when American Avi Kaplan gives a concert in Copenhagen.
From 2011-2017, Avi Kaplan was part of the vocal group Pentatonix, where his deep and expressive bass was a cornerstone of the band's success. They broke through after winning the a cappella singing competition/TV show "NBC's The Sing-Off", sold over six million albums and took home three Grammy Awards, including "Best Country Duo/Group Performance" for their cover of Dolly Parton's iconic "Jolene" - featuring Dolly herself! In 2017, Avi Kaplan left the successful project. He moved to Nashville and released the Nick Drake-inspired single "Fields and Piers" under the pseudonym Avriel & the Sequoias, which marked a completely new direction for his career.
On his own, Avi Kaplan thus cultivates a more searching and thoughtful expression, where classic American music traditions such as country, folk, bluegrass and soul are reinterpreted in intimate and sky-aspiring songs - always with Kaplan's expressive vocals at the center. His strong personal expression has both been compared to Fleet Foxes and the legend David Crosby.
After several years of work, Avi Kaplan's first album under his own name was released in the spring of 2022. "Floating on a Dream", as it was named, was produced by Shooter Jennings, who - in addition to having worked with e.g. Brandie Carlile, Duff McKagan and Marylin Manson – is also the son of outlaw country icon Waylon Jennings. The result is a beautiful, sensitive and evocative album that perfectly balances respect for America's deep musical heritage and melodically catchy modern songwriting. Avi Kaplan visited Denmark in 2020, where he performed to a packed Lille VEGA. Now he finally returns to our latitudes, and this time his Danish fans can look forward to two concerts: Tuesday, September 10 at Voxhall in Aarhus and the following day, September 11, at Pumpehuset in Copenhagen.
